Calicut University, which was founded in 1968, is located in Thenjipalam, Malappuram, Kerala, India. The university maintains off-campus centers and many affiliated colleges in five districts: Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur. There are more than 303 colleges affiliated to this university at present. Over 150 of these colleges are owned by private organizations or individuals and most of them are aided by the state government.
These more than 300 affiliated colleges impart training in Training, Arts and Sciences, Ayurveda, Medical, Paramedical, Engineering, Music, Management Studies, Fine Arts, Nursing, Dental, Pharmacy, Hotel Management, Law, Physical Education etc! The main campus in Thenjipalam has departments in most of the science and humanities areas. The Campus locales spread over around 400 acres in rural Malappuram district. The departments offer post graduate courses and research programmes. However, the main business in the campus is administration and conduct of examinations for all the affiliated colleges which number well over 250! Pareeksha Bhavan, the branch of the university that oversees the conduct of examinations in over 250 affiliated colleges and which awards degrees is the largest wing of the university!
Callicut University has 27 post graduate departments which include Philosophy, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Biotechnology, Life Sciences, Psychology, Library and Information Sciences, Journalism and Mass Communication, Malayalam, Hindi, English, History, Economics, Commerce and Management Studies, Education, Arabic, and Adult Continuing Education etc!
Calicut university offers programs for Certification, Degree, Diploma, and Research Degrees. There are over 50 degree programs offered! Research programs are conducted with the main focus on the following areas such as Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Bio-technology, Botany, Zoology,History, Education, Folklore Studies, Arabic & Sanskrit. Online learning is available in the School of Distance Education, which offers 16 graduate courses, 13 postgraduate courses, and two diploma courses.
